91.3 WYEP presents The Mountain Goats with special guest Tristen
The Summer Knows mini-tour 2016!
I’ll be honest with you, if you wanna know: we’re working on a something right now. When it’s quiet around here you know I’m up to something. I have reached the “when do I get to tell people about it” stage. I have become adept at remaining present to this stage, in a meditative style. There are four of us now. Our vision is growing broader. We are tending to it like Humboldt growers in possession of rare seeds during the pre-legal days.
But Matt and me — Matt Douglas, I mean, our corner-man, the new guy, the one and only, the natural, He Who Wields the Bari Sax — we’re going to hit the road for a weekend, just us two, since “you have to do some shows with just JD and learn what it’s like when he forgets to count off” is a contractual requirement for full membership. Come! See us play stuff the full band never does! Watch Matt attempt to remain in good humor on tight four-counts that I say under my breath instead of aloud!
These are the first just-me-and-Matt shows since he joined the band, and I am amped for them. Changing the formation up over the past few years has resulted in some of my favorite shows ever — me and Wurster at Carnegie Hall during the Evening of Awesome; me and Peter in Barcelona at the end of the Tuttlingen Warriors tour. I’m ambitious and will be listening to Bill Evans & Eddie Gomez sides from now til the shows to get myself psyched up. Come see these special shows if you have the chance! mountain-goats.com | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
Butch Walker - Stay Gold with special guests The Wind and The Wave, Suzanne Santo
"Oh hey. I have a new album coming out on August 26th called “Stay Gold” and it’s awesome. I don’t know. I’m getting bad at doing these personal bio things because I don’t know what to say that doesn’t just sound like a bunch of overhyped drivel. All I can say is.. I’m really enjoying listening to this record LOUD. I don’t know. The last record was a lot of songs about the death of my Father and it was a beautiful process to go through. But coming out of that, and into a feeling of almost “celebration”, I felt the need to write it and record it. It’s a drunken trip down memory lane for sure." - Butch Walker butchwalker.com | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
Angel Olsen with special guest Alex Cameron
Anyone reckless enough to have typecast Angel Olsen according to 2013’s Burn Your Fire For No Witness is in for a sizeable surprise with her third album, MY WOMAN. The crunchier, blown-out production of the former is gone, but that fire is now burning wilder. Her disarming, timeless voice is even more front-and-centre than before, and the overall production is lighter. Yet the strange, raw power and slowly unspooling incantations of her previous efforts remain, so anyone who might attempt to pigeonhole Olsen as either an elliptical outsider or a pop personality is going to be wrong whichever way they choose - Olsen continues to reign over the land between the two with a haunting obliqueness and sophisticated grace. angelolsen.com | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
91.3 WYEP presents Blind Pilot with special guests River Whyless
The past isn't finished with us yet. Love can be like that, too. A couple of years ago I found love in different forms leaving my life at once. In a single month I lost my closest group of friends, my 13 year relationship ended, and my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I had just stopped touring to write the next Blind Pilot album, but instead I was watching each of my plans unthread as a new season pulled forward relentlessly.
Against Me! with special guests Potty Mouth, Frameworks
To pirate the title of one of their early songs (and still a set-list staple), Against Me! is a band that laughs at danger and breaks all the rules. Fronted by Laura Jane Grace, AM!’s much-anticipated latest offering, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, is scheduled for release in January 2014. The title of their sixth album offers a direct nod to news that shocked fans and shook up the rock world when it was dropped—Grace is a transitioning transgender person who revealed her story in the May 12, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone (readers curious to learn more about the transition can check out Laura Jane’s “My First Year as a Woman” journal online in Cosmopolitan). Because Transgender Dysphoria Blues marks the band’s first release with Grace as a woman, there are a lot of misconceptions: The record is neither a radical stylistic departure nor a “concept album.” Rather, it’s just another bold step forward for an artist doing what she has always done—forging her own path by processing the highs and lows of life through music. againstme.net | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
Nothing More with special guests Twelve Foot Ninja, Dinosaur Pile Up, To Whom It May
There are a lot of bands who claim to wear their hearts on their sleeves, but for Texan quartet Nothing More that sentiment could scarcely be more literal. “When we first started, we branded ourselves on the arm after each year of touring, so we’ve all got these scars now, reminding us of the commitment we made to each other,” confides frontman Jonny Hawkins. To say that this is a band who are dedicated to their cause would be to understate the case somewhat. Hailing from San Antonio, Nothing More is a four-headed musical hydra that runs on frenetic passion, unswerving DIY spirit and relentless sonic experimentation. Part schizoid System Of A Down weird-isms, part Mars Volta-esque prog rock freak out, part effortless pop nous, they seamlessly barrel from churning headbang to skyscraping chorus and back again in the blink of an eye. nothingmore.net | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
91.3 WYEP presents Jake Bugg with special guest Syd Arthur
Recorded in London, Los Angeles and Nottingham, highlights are many and include the moving ‘Love Hope And Misery’ driven by a huge chorus, the stomping ‘Bitter Salt’, the soulful ‘Never Wanna Dance’ and the defining title track. For all its diversity, the heartbeat of ‘On My One’ is the blues. “Blues is my favourite genre,” Jake admits. “Whether it’s soul or hip hop, it all stems from the blues. To me the blues just means singing your emotions and expressing your pain so others can feel it. That’s the beauty of music. If nothing else, I’d like to think I’ve done that with this record.” To make three albums by the age of 21 is no mean feat. To singlehandedly make ‘On My One’ shapeshifting effortlessly from blues to pop, rap to folk and soul to country through great songwriting is nothing short of remarkable. Enjoy the ride. jakebugg.com

91.3 WYEP presents Built To Spill with special guests Hop Along, Alex G
Twenty years on from first signing to Warner Bros. Records, Built To Spill is returned in 2015 with its eighth studio album, Untethered Moon. That’s now two complete decades that one of America’s leading “indie rock” bands has happily made its home on a major label, and in the process redefined that clumsy descriptor of independence by operating wholly and consistently under its own steam, taking the proper time to craft timeless songs and playing endless, epic shows to a growing grip of fans each year. Under the command of its constant leader, Doug Martsch, as well as a new rhythm section, Built To Spill’s creative process continues to ebb, flow and evolve in its own orbit, reemerging on record for the first time since 2009’s There Is No Enemy with ten new songs that fit at once into the band’s resonant catalog while infusing fresh energy into that signature sound. example: builttospill.com

Anthony Green with special guests Mat Kerekes, Secret Space
With his high-pitched vocals and prolific songwriting, singer Anthony Green had a hand in many bands throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer, Saosin, Circa Survive, the Sound of Animals Fighting, and several smaller projects. Green was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he joined Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer in the late '90s before relocating to Southern California in 2003. There, he briefly joined the screamo outfit Saosin but ultimately left before the band signed to Capitol Records. He resurfaced with Circa Survive and remained with the group throughout the decade's latter half, during which period he also launched a solo career with the release of 2008's Avalon. In between the release of his debut solo album and 2012's Beautiful Things, Green went through some major life changes, including getting married and having a son. These personal shifts greatly influenced the songwriting and musical direction of his sophomore solo outing, with a deep focus on family, fatherhood, and devotional love. In 2013, Green inaugurated his own label, Moshtradamus Records, by releasing his third album, Young Legs. -Andrew Leahey for AllMusic.com anthonygreenmusic.com | Purchase Tickets Online | 866-468-3401 | Reserve Balcony | Local Outlets
